Hello!

Huh?

Look!

Aww!

Hmm!

Aww, wow!

Huh? - Look!

Ah!

I'm Sally!

And I'm Possum.

Hello!!

Oh!

(SNIFFS)

Ooh. Mm-mm!

(LAUGHS)

Nom, nom, nom.

(CHUCKLES) Huh? Wha?

What's that?

Hm.

Oh, look! Hello, everyone.

Hi, everyone.

We're having lunch now.

Um, Sally? This toast is very small.

I can't put any jam on it.

No, they're not for spreading jam on.

These are called croutons.

They go into the soup.

They add a bit of crunch to the soup.

They're delicious.

Oh!

You can try it.

OK.

(GASPS) Sally, look! They float!

Yes.

Lots of things can float.

Oh, I wonder who's here. Let's see.

(GASPS) Look, it's Jay!

Hello!

Yes, Jay is here.

Jay, look at this!

They're floating.

Yes.

Huh?

You, me...? OK!

Come on.

Come on, Sally!

Hm.

(GASPS)

(LAUGHS)

Wow.

Sally, what is it?

I don't know.

Should we open it and see?

OK. Yeah!

Wow.

Sally, what is it?

This is a kayak.

It's a bit like a canoe and it floats along.

That's what this is.

But how does this float?

It's far too heavy.

This couldn't float.

Oh, no, you'll see, Possum.

It will float quite easily.

Oh. (GASPS)

What's that for?

That is a lifejacket.

That floats on the water, as well.

It wouldn't sink at all.

You put that on in case you fall out of the kayak.

You just float along the top of the water.

That will keep you safe.

Oh, wow.

(GASPS) Sally, it's for two people!

No, actually, I think this is a one person kayak

and a one Possum kayak.

(LAUGHS) You're funny.

Yes, that's the paddle.

That's great!

So, when we paddle,

it propels the kayak forward.

(GASPS) Well, can we do it now?

Let's go now.

Oh, wait, wait, wait, wait.

Huh?

Yes, we need to put it in the water first

and then you can get in it.

Oh, OK.

Well, can we go now?

Yes. Why don't we go now?

Let's go for a kayak ride.

Great!

Yeah, I can lift it, Jay.

I'm big and strong.

Yeah, we'll be fine.

Thank you! Bye!

Bye! Bye!

I think we're ready to go.

Right, I'll get the front

and you get the back.

Come on!

(GRUNTS)

Oh, Possum, you are so good at paddling the kayak.

So are you, Sally.

You're like a professional.

Ah, we had such a good day.

So many laughs.

Sally, I'm confused.

This is a very heavy kayak but it still managed to float.

Oh, it is a bit of a trick, isn't it?

If you put a heavy thing on the water,

sometimes it can float.

You don't have to worry about how heavy it is.

It's how you place it on the water.

Sometimes heavy things do sink,

but if you shape it correctly,

it can float.

Like a big boat, for example.

Oh.

Why don't we watch children investigating which things float

and which things sink?

Yeah, let's watch.

Oh, that was fun!

Ah, yeah!

I want to learn more about what floats and what sinks.

Well, why don't we go to the kitchen and do that?

Let's have a look.

Yeah, let's go!

OK, are we ready?

Let's see what floats and sinks.

Yes, we've got all sorts of different things to put in there,

and when we work out what they do,

we can sort them.

Would you like to go first?

OK.

Oh, a ball.

What do you think will happen?

Sink.

Sink? OK, let's have a look.

(GASPS) It's floating!

That's right! It's floating,

so we can put that into the float pile.

Oh, that looks heavy.

I think it will sink.

Me too.

(LAUGHS) It sank!

I know. This is going to float.

I think so.

(LAUGHS) Yes!

You were right!

(LAUGHS)

Hm.

Hm.

Sink.

A nail? I think it might float.

(LAUGHS) It sank!

You're right, it did sink.

(GASPS)

It's floating.

Yeah, it's floating.

Wood floats.

Hm.

(GASPS) That's a nail.

The nail sank, but the wood floats.

What do you think will happen,

Possum?

Oh.

Let's have a look. I don't know.

Let's see.

(GASPS) (LAUGHS)

Hm.

Huh?

That's a small piece of wood.

I think, oh, I don't know.

Huh?

Ah.

It's in the middle.

Oh, Jay is here!

Oh!

Hi, Jay!

Hi!

It was great!

Yeah.

Jay, come see what we're doing.

Sink...and float.

We'll show you.

Ta-da!

(CHUCKLES)

And look at this one.

It sinks!

Oh.

Huh?

(BOTH GASP)

It floats!

It's like a boat.

Yes.

It doesn't sink. It floats.

Huh?

Sink.

(LAUGHS)

It sank.

Huh?

Hm?

Oh.

He's shaping it.

Yes.

(GASPS)

Wow!

(GASPS) It's like a kayak.

Yes!

Today was such a wonderful day.

Yes, we have had

such a lovely day.

Thank you, Jay,

for bringing the kayak.

Yeah, thanks, Jay.

Thank you.

Well, our time is up.

Thanks for watching.

See you next time.

Bye!

Bye!

Jay, look at this.

The Kayak

Possum is happily learning about things that can float on his soup when Jay arrives with something much bigger that can float. How can that big kayak float? And who is going to paddle it?
